The Story

What happens when God seems absent—but is actually working behind the scenes? The Book of Esther is one of the most remarkable books of the Old Testament. God’s name is never mentioned in Esther, yet His providence is evident throughout the story. Esther shows us that even when God seems hidden, He remains sovereignly at work to protect His people and accomplish His purposes. In this lesson, we walk through the Book of Esther in its historical and biblical context, examining Esther, Mordecai, King Xerxes, Haman, and the threat of annihilation facing God’s people. We’ll explore:• Why Esther takes place in Persia rather than the Promised Land
• Where Esther fits in the history of Israel after the exile
• Why some Jews remained in Persia rather than returning to Jerusalem
• The significance of the fact that God is never explicitly mentioned in Esther
• God’s providence and His protection of His people
• The irony that runs throughout the story of Esther
• Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews—and how God turns the situation completely around
• The significance of Esther and Mordecai
• The origin and purpose of the Feast of Purim
• What Esther teaches Christians about living faithfully as exiles in this world
• How Esther ultimately points us toward the hope we have in Jesus ChristThe Book of Esther reminds us that what we see is not the whole story. When circumstances appear hopeless and God seems hidden, He is still sovereign. His providence does not depend upon our ability to see what He is doing.Esther is therefore not merely an ancient story about a Jewish queen in Persia. It is a powerful encouragement to God's people today: trust God, look beyond what is seen, and remember that He is in control. If you want to understand the Bible in its historical context and see how the books of the Old Testament fit together, this lesson will help you see Esther in the larger story of Scripture and God's redemptive purposes. Here’s the video @ https://youtu.be/jcaploQCl40See other resources and teaching @ https://www.christchurchclayton.org/media
