Jonah & Amos.  Judgment, Repentance, and God’s Mercy | Old Testament Review

The Story

In this Old Testament review lesson, we look back at the books of Jonah and Amos and consider what these prophets teach us about God’s judgment, repentance, mercy, and His dealings with His people.

First, we review the setting and message of Jonah. Jonah was sent to Nineveh but initially fled in the opposite direction. After Jonah repents, he eventually preaches to Nineveh, and the Ninevites respond with repentance. God then shows mercy rather than bringing the destruction Jonah had announced. The lesson explores why Jonah was angry about God’s mercy and what this reveals about our own tendency to want justice for others while wanting mercy for ourselves.
We also examine an important principle for understanding prophetic announcements of future judgment: God’s warnings of judgment can involve intervening historical contingencies. Jonah’s announcement that Nineveh would be destroyed in forty days was followed by repentance and God’s relenting. Jeremiah 18:7–10 provides an important explanation of how God’s announcements of judgment and blessing are to be understood.

Then we review Amos, including his ministry during the reign of Jeroboam II, his warnings of coming judgment against the nations, Judah, and Israel, and the eventual exile of the northern kingdom. We consider why Amos announces judgment and how repentance and intervening historical circumstances relate to the fulfillment of prophetic warnings.

Finally, we review the hope of Amos 9:11–15: God will not abandon His people forever but will restore the Davidic kingship and bless His people. This provides an important conclusion to the larger message of judgment and restoration in Amos.

This lesson is designed for Christians who want to understand the Old Testament prophets in their historical and theological context and to read prophetic passages carefully and faithfully.
