The Story

What are 1 & 2 Kings, Song of Songs, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes about?

In this Bible lesson, we review the content, purpose, major characters, events, and themes of four important Old Testament books.

This lesson reviews 1 & 2 Kings, including Solomon, the division of the kingdom, the kings of Israel and Judah, Elijah and Elisha, and the exile. We also consider an important principle for interpreting Biblical narrative: understanding the difference between the historical events being described and the time and audience for whom the book was written.

We then review Song of Songs (Song of Solomon), including Solomon, his bride, the wedding setting, and the people of Israel who witness the events.

Next, we turn to Proverbs and its Biblical definition of wisdom. Wisdom is not merely having additional insight or receiving some kind of extra-Biblical revelation. Proverbs teaches wisdom as knowing God's commandments and applying them faithfully to the circumstances of life.

Finally, we review Ecclesiastes and Solomon's reflections near the end of his life on work, hardship, meaning, prosperity, suffering, and the apparent inconsistencies of life. Ecclesiastes teaches us not to judge ultimate meaning merely by what we can see happening in this present life, but to live faithfully before God and remember His final judgment.

This lesson is designed for Christians who want to understand the Old Testament more clearly, especially the historical books and wisdom literature, and for students interested in Biblical interpretation and how individual books of Scripture communicate their message to their original audience.
